About the piece: The Hexaportal is a 9 ft tall hexagonal portal made of reflective aluminum sheet metal in a geometric spiraling pattern. The inside of the hexagonal spiral is filled with LEDs, and a walkway in the center allows participants to walk through the hexagonal opening. A motion sensor on the walkway triggers lighting changes when participants walk through, displaying one of 5 color options. A sign will be posted explaining your “fortune” as a result of the colors the portal makes, similar to how a magic 8 ball works. The fortune will be based on Interdimensional Future Transcription Technology, but if I can’t get that working it will be random (shhh). When participants are not interacting, the piece will cycle through preset rainbow patterns.

About the artists: David and Kali are a husband-and-wife artist-engineer duo creating large-scale illuminated sculptures for events since attending their first Burning Man in 2022. Both engineers who met at MIT, their art combines technical precision with playful interaction, specializing in interactive illuminated aluminum sculptural installations and wearable light art. Some of their previous installations include Cyclica (2023) and Gravity Organ (2024). Beyond large-scale work, they are known for their wearable art, often spotted in over-the-top coordinated costumes.
