Disco Boom
Joe Petrowski
About the piece: Laser Disco transforms light, movement, and atmosphere into a constantly shifting visual environment. A constellation of rotating mirror balls scatters points of colored light throughout the surrounding space, while lasers cut through the atmosphere in bold, geometric patterns. Haze reveals the paths of the beams in midair, turning normally invisible light into something sculptural and tangible.
At the center of the installation is a simple question: Why are you on the dance floor? Inspired by the ongoing Why Are You on the Dance Floor? project, Laser Disco considers the dance floor as more than a place to dance—it can be a space for freedom, escape, connection, joy, memory, and self-expression.
Part light sculpture, part disco spectacle, Laser Disco takes the familiar visual language of nightlife—mirror balls, lasers, movement, color, and light—and brings it into public space. As the mirror balls rotate and layers of light continually shift and evolve, the environment is never quite the same twice. The installation invites visitors to step into the light, move through it, and consider their own answer to the question: Why are you on the dance floor?
